Perhaps the best defensive player on the 1922 and ’23 football teams, the Aberdeen native captained the 1923 team and was a member of the 1922 squad which played West Virginia in San Diego on Christmas Day in the school’s first bowl game. He was so consistent during his playing days at Gonzaga there was a tendency to take him for granted. For example, on a trip to Detroit there was no substitute for Ashmore on the travel roster. No matter, he played every minute of every game in his two seasons at Gonzaga. A strong blocker offensively, the 210-pounder was also regarded as the best defensive player. Ashmore played for four National Football League seasons with the Milwaukee Badgers, Duluth Eskimos, Chicago Bears and with the Green Bay Packers’ first NFL championship team in 1929.
