Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame
In those years when Gonzaga High School was next door to the university, it was an easy walk for Curran to move from an outstanding three-sport prep career – baseball pitcher, All-City basketballer, football quarterback as a senior – to collegiate competition. In the first of four varsity basketball seasons at the university, Curran was part of the “G-Whiz Kids” of 1946, a team that built a 20-9 record. In those basketball seasons, Curran, a guard with strong defensive skills, scored 1,121 points. From 1946-50, the team won 79 games and played in the NAIA Tournament, the National Catholic Invitational and the Los Angeles Invitational where he was chosen all-tournament. Curran pitched four varsity baseball seasons as well, one of the highlights a perfect game against the University of Montana. One spring he even found time to earn a tennis letter. Curran pitched one season with the professional Spokane Indians before being called to military service.
