As a youngster Terry Cossette was often at Gonzaga as an avid follower of the university’s sports squads. As a collegian, he became one of the leaders. While a prep athlete, when Gonzaga High School was still on Boone Avenue, Cossette excelled as a left-handed pitcher and he carried his baseball skills across the campus to play four superlative seasons at the university. In his sophomore season of 1956, Cossette pitched one of the classic games in Gonzaga’s baseball history, a perfect game with 12 strikeouts against the University of Idaho, in a 1-0 win, one of his two collegiate no-hitters. Cossette capped his collegiate career with a splendid senior season in 1958 for Gonzaga’s best team of that era. The club had a 20-1 record and Cossette went 6-1 for the season. He had a pair of one-hitters and established a 1.50 earned run average. Three times that season Cossette struck out 17 batters, each time in a seven-inning game.
