Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame
Rich Evans was one of the ‘G-Whiz Kids’ as a member of the freshman-dominated basketball team of 1946-47 that compiled a 20-9 record, the best-ever mark for longtime Gonzaga coach Claude McGrath. He scored 1,507 points in four varsity seasons to rank third on the all-time list as Gonzaga entered the 1989-90 season. The 6-0 forward, who was All-State for his Salina, Kan., high school, was singled out for his scoring prowess as Gonzaga’s ‘Mr. Points.’ Evans was a member of Gonzaga's inaugural postseason team, with the Bulldogs advancing to the NAIA National Championship tournament in 1948. Gonzaga won 79 games in his four varsity seasons. Evans captained the team as a senior and capped his career with 489 points for a 17.5 average that season. He was named All-American in 1950 by the National Catholic Digest.
