Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame
Hard-nosed definitely describes Max Krause as a football player—he once preserved a victory by blocking a field goal attempt with a face-first drive. Max played 60-minute football at Gonzaga High School and Gonzaga University. In his senior college season, he rushed for 1,044 yards, earned All-West Coast honors and played in the East-West Shrine Game. Krause split eight seasons in the National Football League between the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins from 1933 to 1940 before a knee injury ended his playing days. Valued as a blocking back on offense and as a sure-tackling linebacker on defense, Max displayed his running ability on occasion: In a game against Philadelphia near the end of his pro career, he gained 132 yards on just six carries and scored three touchdowns. His Washington kickoff return record stood up until the 1980s. He was inducted into the Inland Empire Sports Hall of Fame in 1981.
