Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame
In an era when many north Idaho high schools boasted highly competitive boxing teams, Neumayer came out of Bonners Ferry and onto the Gonzaga campus in 1942 as a Panhandle League champion and undefeated prep boxer. Small but rugged, Neumayer quickly established himself as one of the hardest punchers in intercollegiate boxing. Observers of his matches felt his punches had the authority of those delivered by boxers three or four divisions heavier. Although his collegiate career was interrupted by Navy service during World War II and abbreviated by an arm injury his senior year, Neumayer won two Pacific Coast Intercollegiate championships, at 125 pounds in 1947 and at 119 in 1948, but lost a close decision in his opening 119-pound bout to the eventual division champion. After graduation, Neumayer taught and coached for 40 years at Orofino High School in Idaho.
