In any discussion of Hunting’s storied football career at Gonzaga in the late 1920s, the phrase “coffin corner” was bound to come up. That’s the sort of punter the Iowa native was. His consistency at pinning opposing teams deep in their territory all but overshadowed his ability as a passer, open-field runner and inspirational leader at quarterback. Those qualities were not missed by Coach Clipper Smith, switching the young Hunting to quarterback even though he starred at halfback in the first few games at Gonzaga. Smith tabbed Hunting team captain his senior year. Hunting played in the 1930 East-West Shrine Game, the first Gonzaga player selected. He later played and coached seven seasons for the West Seattle Athletic Club. During World War II, he was the physical training director for the 2nd Air Force. In 1935, Hunting was named the quarterback on an all-time Gonzaga team selected by the Gonzaga Bulletin.
