When she arrived at Gonzaga in the early 1950s, opportunities for competition in sports were limited for women, so Guthrie simply turned out for the men’s golf team. Simply put, she had no trouble earning a spot. The addition of her smooth swing made the varsity team markedly better. Prominent on the Pacific Northwest golf scene since childhood, she won the Washington and Idaho women’s amateur championships at age 16 while a Lewis and Clark High School student. Over the years, she won every regional or sectional competition and dominated the local golfing scene for a generation. She won the Spokane area championship 16 times along with numerous regional club titles. In the late 1980s, she twice competed in the United States Senior Women’s Amateurs, winning each time. She was named Inland Empire Woman Athlete of the Year in 1987 and was inducted into the I.E. Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
