Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame
As a youngster in San Carlos, California, Greg Sten played French horn for the noted California Youth Orchestra, but at Gonzaga, as a 6-7 forward, he played four solid seasons of basketball on an ascending scale of excellence. He averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds per game on the freshman team, then earned Big Sky Conference honorable mention as a sophomore. His balanced play as a junior – 144 points and 339 rebounds – earned him second-team all-conference honors. A two-game burst of 25 field goals and 29 rebounds in a sweep on the road of traditional Big Sky foes, Montana and Montana State, was typical of his play as a senior, when he was named to the Big Sky first team. He was voted Gonzaga’s most valuable player for that 1972-73 season. Overall, in three varsity seasons, he scored 1,168 points and grabbed 783 rebounds, both high on Gonzaga all-time lists.
