Left-handed pitcher Mike Davey’s talent and tenacity helped carry Gonzaga University baseball teams to two Big Sky Conference titles in 1973 and ’74. The durable Davey, who starred at Gonzaga Prep, pitched 286 innings, struck out 312 and won 24 games in three seasons. One April stretch in 1973 provides an example of Davey’s competitiveness. On Wednesday, he pitched four shutout innings in relief against Washington State University, then Saturday he struck out five in two innings to complete a suspended game against Idaho, and Sunday he pitched a no-hitter against Idaho in the first game of a double-header and retired the side in order in the last inning of the second game to save a teammate’s victory. Davey went on to a seven-season professional career. He was selected to All-Star teams in the International League and the Southern Association, and pitched in the majors for the Atlanta Braves in 1977-78.
