“This lad has a faculty for doing the sensational in all lines of sport he tackles,” an early-day Gonzaga University publication said of Frank McKevitt. The subject of the compliment was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball. McKevitt, who was born in Butte, Mont., was the quarterback and a long-yardage punter for the football squad. He was a small but quick forward in basketball and a wide-ranging outfielder in baseball—contemporaries talked for years about a ninth-inning home run he hit against Washington State. He coached the 1910-11 basketball team and captained the 1911 football club. McKevitt was a member of Gonzaga’s first law school graduating class in 1915. He retired from a distinguished 55-year law practice in 1970 at the age of 80. He was active in many Spokane civic causes and was one of seven founders of the sports-promoting Athletic Round Table.
