OMAHA, Neb. — Gonzaga men's soccer battled unbeaten Creighton through 80 scoreless minutes Friday night before the Bluejays scored twice late to earn a 2-0 victory at Morrison Stadium.
The Bulldogs (2-2-1) and Bluejays (4-0-1) went into halftime scoreless, with Gonzaga putting two of its four first-half shots on frame. Creighton finished the opening 45 minutes with an 8-4 advantage in shots, but Gonzaga goalkeeper Chema Preciado made three saves to keep the match even.
Gonzaga generated one of the first chances of the night in the sixth minute when Carson Hammond sent a shot wide left. Drew Pedersen followed with a shot on goal in the 14th minute, and Morgan Olson put an attempt on frame in the 19th minute before another Olson shot was blocked moments later.
The Bulldogs continued to hold Creighton off the board after the break. Preciado came up with another save in the 79th minute, stopping Brady Bragg's attempt to preserve the scoreless tie.
Creighton finally broke through in the 81st minute. Matthew Reed scored his fourth goal of the season at the 80:37 mark off assists from Bragg and Spencer Sappleton to give the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage.
The Bluejays added an insurance goal less than six minutes later, with Bragg finding the net at 86:16 off an assist from Carter Derksen to make it 2-0. Gonzaga was unable to answer over the closing minutes.
Gonzaga finished with eight shots, including three on goal, while Creighton recorded 17 shots and six on frame. Olson led the Bulldogs with three attempts, while Michael Luande added two off the bench. Pedersen, Olson and Luande each put a shot on target. Preciado played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with four saves.
Creighton held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, while Gonzaga committed 12 fouls compared to 16 by the Bluejays. The Bulldogs held 45 percent of the possession.
With the loss, Gonzaga moves to 2-2-1 on the season, while Creighton remains unbeaten at 4-0-1.
