SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's soccer suffered a 2-1 setback against UC San Diego in Pac-12 Conference play Saturday night at Luger Field.
The Bulldogs (3-5-2, 0-2-0 Pac-12) took a late lead behind Morgan Olson's first goal of the season, but the Tritons (6-3-1, 1-0-1 Pac-12) responded with two goals to secure the win. All three goals came in a span of less than seven minutes, from 81:24 to 88:02.
A cagey first half saw UC San Diego hold the majority of possession but fail to register a shot on target. Gonzaga created several strong scoring opportunities, recording six shots and placing four on goal, but the teams entered halftime scoreless.
The Bulldogs continued to push offensively in the second half and broke through at 81:24. Morgan Olson scored off assists from Nicolas Golesis and Dylan Cantafio to put Gonzaga ahead 1-0 with 8:36 remaining.
UC San Diego equalized at 83:18. Chema Preciado saved a penalty kick from Gavin Allegaert, but Kelham Wolf finished the rebound to tie the match at 1-1. Wolf's goal was unassisted.
Gonzaga pressed for another breakthrough, with Michael Divano forcing two second-half saves from UC San Diego goalkeeper Nic Thiele, who finished with seven saves.
The Tritons found the late winner at 88:02 when Richard Hoang scored off an assist from Masayuki Fujita. The goal left Gonzaga with just 1:58 to respond, and UC San Diego held on for the victory.
The Bulldogs finished with 19 shots, placing nine on goal, while UC San Diego recorded 10 shots and six on target. Gonzaga generated four corner kicks, including three in the second half. Preciado made four saves for the Zags, including his late penalty stop.
Michael Luande led Gonzaga with four shots, including two on goal. Divano added three shots and two on target, while Drew Pedersen and Golesis each recorded three shots and one on goal. Isaac Dalhart, Noah Ervin and Olson each added a shot on target.
