SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gonzaga men's soccer scored three second-half goals to secure a 3-1 victory over Sacramento State Wednesday evening at Hornet Field.
The Bulldogs (4-5-2) had goals from Damoni McKenna, Noah Ervin and Drew Pedersen to earn the road win. Gonzaga broke a scoreless tie early in the second half before responding to Sacramento State's equalizer with two unanswered goals to seal the victory.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Gonzaga wasted little time finding the back of the net in the second half. McKenna opened the scoring in the 47th minute, finishing a right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner off assists from Morgan Olson and Ervin. The goal marked McKenna's second of the season.
Sacramento State (3-6-2) responded in the 57th minute when Zac Giles scored his fifth goal of the season off assists from Eli Reyneveld and Adrian Alvarenga to even the match at 1-1.
The Bulldogs continued to apply offensive pressure, generating several opportunities before reclaiming the lead in the 70th minute. Ervin found the bottom-right corner of the net off assists from Michael Divano and Pedersen, putting Gonzaga back in front, 2-1. The goal marked Ervin's first of the season and proved to be the game-winner.
Gonzaga added an insurance goal in the 85th minute when Pedersen converted a penalty kick, placing his shot into the bottom-left corner to extend the Bulldogs' advantage to 3-1. The goal marked Pedersen's sixth of the season and capped a three-point performance, as he also assisted on Ervin's game-winner. Ervin matched Pedersen with three points of his own, recording a goal and an assist in the victory.
The Bulldogs controlled much of the offensive action in the second half, outshooting Sacramento State 13-7 after being outshot 9-3 in the opening period. Both teams finished with 16 shots, while Gonzaga held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Pedersen led Gonzaga with three shots, including two on goal, while McKenna, Ervin and Divano each recorded two attempts. The Bulldogs placed five shots on target, with three finding the back of the net.
