OMAHA, Neb. — Gonzaga men's soccer fell to Loyola Chicago, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium. The Bulldogs (2-3-1) outshot the unbeaten Ramblers (4-0-2), 15-12, and put eight attempts on frame, but a late penalty kick proved to be the difference.
The two sides played through a scoreless opening 45 minutes despite combining for 14 shots. Gonzaga generated six attempts in the first half, placing four on goal, while Loyola Chicago finished with eight shots and five on target. Chema Preciado made five saves in the opening period to keep the match level.
Gonzaga increased the pressure after halftime, recording nine of its 15 shots in the second half. Isaac Dalhart forced a save in the 61st minute before Dashiell Stein put two attempts on target later in the half. Morgan Olson added another shot on goal in the 81st minute as the Bulldogs continued to search for the breakthrough.
The Ramblers broke the scoreless tie in the 84th minute when Luka Ivancic converted a penalty kick for his third goal of the season. Gonzaga continued to push forward in the closing minutes, earning a corner in the final minute before Sam Dahlin sent the Bulldogs' final attempt high just before the final whistle.
Gonzaga held advantages in shots (15-12), shots on goal (8-6), corner kicks (8-7) and possession (56-44 percent). Stein led the Bulldogs with three shots, including two on goal, while Dylan Cantafio also recorded three attempts. Dahlin and Olson added two shots apiece. Preciado finished with five saves in 90 minutes.
The loss moves Gonzaga to 2-3-1 on the season, while Loyola Chicago improves to 4-0-2.
