SPOKANE, Wash.-  Gonzaga Volleyball (7-13, 2-6 Pac-12) picked up a second straight Pac-12 victory in a fifth set by defeating Texas State (7-13, 2-7 Pac-12) on Thursday night after fighting off match point in the fifth set.
The Zags captured the first set 25-15 and the third set with a 25-14 score, while Texas State won the second and fourth sets 25-21 and 25-20. GU rallied against a match point with three straight points to take the fifth set 16-14.
Gonzaga was led by a remarkable performance from Claire Wagstaff, who set a career high with 30 points in the match. Those 30 points are the second most by a Gonzaga player in a match since 2016. This was also the most points of any Pac-12 player in a match this season Wagstaff had 25 kills to go along with four aces and a pair of block assists while hitting for a .400 hitting percentage.
The Zags set a precedent for an efficient hitting night in the first set when Gabby Vandal opened the game with three straight kills to go on a solo run to give GU the lead in the set. GU did not have a single attacking error in the first set while scoring 15 kills on .516 hitting.
Despite both teams scoring 15 kills in the second, the Bobcats edged the set to tie the match. Gonzaga responded by hitting for another .538 hitting percentage in the third set to take another lead with 16 more kills in the set. Texas State took the fourth set with 15 kills of their own to force another fifth set.
GU fell behind 14-13 and faced a match point before Wagstaff had back to back kills to tie the game. Maggie Rickert then iced the game for the Zags with a clutch kill just one match after starting a game as a libero.
"A gritty performance and I was proud of this team to come back and battle it out to a win in the fifth set" said head coach JT Wenger. "I'm proud of the group and proud of the effort. We pride ourselves on putting people in different roles and for Maggie to show that by putting away a ball to win is pretty special".
Gonzaga Volleyball will look to build on the start of a home conference winning streak when they take on San Diego State on Saturday at noon.
