Volleyball falls in four sets in Pac-12 opener in Boise

BOISE, Idaho- Gonzaga Volleyball (5-8, 0-1 Pac-12) lost the Pac-12 conference opener on the road at Boise State (9-5, 1-0 Pac-12) in four sets. The Zags won the first set 26-24 before the Broncos won the remaining sets 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16
The Bulldogs won the first set behind an impressive comeback, rallying from a 15-9 deficit at the media timeout to tie the set for the first time at 23 points each. The Zags then took the set in extra points thanks to a kill from Claire Wagstaff, who had 10 kills in the first set alone.Â
The Broncos captured the second set after holding the Zags to just a .075 hitting percentage. GU gave away nine points on attacking errors in the second set.Â
Boise State used efficient hitting to take the third set, hitting at a .400 hitting percentage heading into the media timeout. The Zags had a late rally to cut into the lead in the set, but the Broncos used back to back kills to stop the rally and take an overall lead in the match. The Zags were held to just 10 kills in the fourth set as the Broncos put away the match with a 64% sideout percentage.Â
Three Zags had double digit kills, including a game high 22 kills by Wagstaff. She took 58 attacks, the fifth most attacks by a GU player in a four set match since 2005. Veronica Sorensen had a double double with 12 kills and 17 digs, while Dani Clewis had 16 digs to complement 39 assists. Â
The match had a reported attendance of 2,290, the largest crowd for a volleyball match in the history of the state of Idaho. Gonzaga will continue the conference road trip by taking on Utah State on Saturday at 11 am pacific time.
