FRESNO, Calif.- Gonzaga Volleyball (8-15, 3-8 Pac-12) defeated Fresno State (7-14, 2-8 Pac-12) by winning three straight sets on Saturday. Fresno State won the first set 25-22 before GU reeled off 25-23, 25-16 and 25-22 set wins to pick up the road win.
Claire Wagstaff led the match with 18 kills, while Veronica Sorensen joined her in double digits with 10 kills. Dani Johnson returned to the court for the first time this season with a solid 8 kills. Johnson and Dani Clewis each had 8 kills on 11 attacks, tying for the seventh best hitting percentage in a match by a qualified hitter in modern GU history.
After a 20 minute delay for a power outage in the arena delayed the first serve of the match, Fresno State took a closely contested first set that was tied nine times and had four lead changes. Despite GU having more kills in the set with 16, Fresno State picked up the brief lead behind four aces in the set. Â
The second set was even more of a back and forth affair, with the set being tied at 13 separate points. The Zags took the set by using a 3-0 run to come from behind and win the set in the final points, with Wagstaff scoring an ace and a kill before Niki Clausen won the set with another kill. Six different Zags scored a kill in the set as GU used depth to tie the game.
GU again had six Zags score a kill in the third set while hitting for a .333 hitting percentage to win the set. Gonzaga scored a point of 14 of 17 serves they faced, with a strong serve receive being the key to a set win behind a 82% sideout percentage. A highly efficient fourth set helped the Zags close out the match while scoring 12 kills while giving away just a single attacking error. GU had 58 total kills on the night while holding Fresno State to just a .207 hitting percentage.
The Zags will take on Colorado State on the road on Thursday at 5 p.m. pacific time before returning home to play against Washington State on Saturday at 11 a.m.
