After throwing a complete game shutout in Gonzaga's 3-0 win over Saint Mary's on Sunday, RHP Jacob Rutherford has been named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Rutherford is both the first Zags pitcher since Alek Jacob in 2021 to record a nine-inning shutout and first with multiple complete-game outings in the same season since then. Prior to Jacob's complete game shutout that season, the feat hadn't been accomplished since Eli Morgan threw two CG shutouts in 2017.
RAWLINGS WCC BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – JACOB RUTHERFORD, R-JR. – GONZAGA
The 6-2 redshirt junior righty struck out 10 – one short of a career-high set against Portland two weeks prior – and only walked one during his time on the mound, throwing 121 total pitches in the process. After the Zags extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Rutherford retired six of the last seven batters he faced to slam the door on a comeback while notching his ninth and 10th Ks of the day in the process.
The win moved him to 4-1 in games of record with a 3.47 ERA over nine starts, with two complete games and three outings of eight innings or more.
Rutherford is the second Zag pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Week honors this year after RHP Owen Wild was recognized on April 3. GU had a player win Player or Pitcher of the Week seven times in the 2022 season, with five Pitchers of the Week.
