GU kept USF scoreless in second half
SAN FRANCISCO — Gonzaga men's soccer was unable to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit on Sunday afternoon at San Francisco.
The Zags kept USF scoreless for the entirety of the second half, but couldn't convert its opportunities, including a penalty kick, on the way to the West Coast Conference defeat on the road.
"I'm very proud of the team, it was an excellent performance from everyone," head coach Paul Meehan said. "It was unlucky to give up a goal off a deflection and another on a penalty kick. Our guys played well and the performance speaks volumes about who they are at this point in the season."
GU held San Francisco scoreless for the first 32 minutes until San Francisco struck twice in a span of five minutes in the latter half of the opening 45 minutes. The Dons got their first goal from Sean Bowman on a deflected shot from 20 yards out in the 33rd minute and then added a penalty kick goal by Sandro Bradara in the 38th minute.
Gonzaga earned a penalty kick late in the second half when Sam Turner was fouled inside the penalty box. Frankie Ljucovic took the kick, but rifled a shot off the left post before USF recovered to play the ball out of the box.
Ben Willis made two saves in net for Gonzaga, while GU outshot USF 15-10 overall in the match.
The Zags will be back on the road in their next match, taking on undefeated and fourth-ranked Saint Mary's on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. Live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
