Gonzaga Volleyball Toppled By Lumberjacks

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Northern Arizona University hit .369 for the match Saturday afternoon in defeating Gonzaga University 30-23, 30-20, 30-27 in the Oregon State Volleyball Showcase at Gill Coliseum.
The loss was the second in as many matches to open the season for the Bulldogs, who will complete play in the tournament this evening against Mississippi State University.
Hitting efficiency was the difference in the match. NAU hit .323 in game one, .405 in game two and .372 in game three. Gonzaga, meanwhile, hit .138, .034 and .318, respectively, in the three games. The Bulldogs had a game-high 18 kills in game three.
Christina Davis was the lone Bulldog in double-digit kills with 13. NAU was led by the trio of Calire Robertson, 19 kills in 31 attempts and a .516 hitting percentage, Renee Lathrop with 10 kills in 16 attempts and a .562 percentage and Ellie Butterfield with 12 kills in 25 attempts and a .360 percentage.
After a 9-9 tie in game one the Lumberjacks (2-0) went on a 9-2 run for an 18-11 lead and never looked back. Game two was tighter, the Bulldogs trailing 15-12 before NAU scored seven straight points for a 22-12 advantage. Game three was close all the way, NAU leading 27-26 prior to scoring three of the last four points to claim the sweep.
