Zags sweep Montana behind Wagstaff’s 20 points

SPOKANE, Washington-Â Gonzaga Volleyball (5-7) swept Montana (4-7) with 27-25, 25-19 and 25-20 set wins on Saturday. Claire Wagstaff had a game high 17 kills and another two aces to help power the Zags to victory.
Wagstaff ended the match with 20 points (17 kills, two aces and two block assists), the most points by a Gonzaga player in a three-set match since 2019.
The first set was the closest of the match, with GU and Montana tying at 12 separate points with 5 lead changes. The Zags went on a run to force Montana to use a timeout at 22-20. Veronica Sorensen scored an ace in the ensuing point and forced Montana to take another timeout after just one point. GU faced set point at 25-24, but Wagstaff took over the set with a kill and then two back to back aces to win the first in extra points.
Gonzaga opened the second set on a 6-2 run to force a very early Montana timeout after just eight points. GU continued to extend the lead out to 11-4 to force the Grizzlies to use both timeouts before they had even scored 5 points. The Zags had a remarkable 19 kills in the second set, hitting for a very efficient .485 hitting percentage to take the set.
Coming out of the third set media timeout, Sorensen served up her own pair of back to back aces to force another immediate Montana timeout in a response. The Zags continued to take the third and the win behind another efficient .359 hitting percentage. GU scored on 71% of their sideouts in the third set.
The Zags did not substitute at all in today's match, with all six starters and libero Maggie Rickert combining to player every point. Wagstaff also led the match in digs with 13 and had a .441 hitting percentage. Sorensen had 10 kills, while Dani Clewis had 29 assists and a career high 7 kills while serving as the setter for every point. Â
Gonzaga Volleyball will play in a Pac-12 match for the first time in program history when they take on Boise State on the road on Thursday night.
