Gonzaga’s seven match league slate begins Feb. 28
SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced its men's soccer league schedule Friday. Gonzaga will play seven WCC contests, beginning Feb. 28, versus San Francisco in Spokane.
Following the postponement of the fall seasons in these three sports on Aug. 13 due the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Conference office worked in consultation with the membership to develop modified schedules that align with the NCAA's new regular-season start dates and championships in 2021. The NCAA moved championships in all fall sports to the spring of 2021.
The WCC will conduct a modified seven-week men's soccer schedule from February 28 through April 11. Matches will be held on Sundays in six of the seven weeks, while each team will square off on Saturday during the week of Easter.
"I couldn't be happier or prouder of our guys with their approach and commitment to preparing for the upcoming season," Gonzaga Head Coach Paul Meehan said. "We trained extremely well this Fall and go into the December break a better team than when we arrived on August. We are eager to continue preparing for what we know will be a very challenging match schedule."
The NCAA Men's Soccer Championship will consist of a 36-team bracket this season. Selections for the tournament will occur on April 18, culminating with the Men's College Cup May 13-17. The WCC's regular-season champion will earn the conference's automatic qualification to the tournament.
After hosting San Francisco in the league opener, the Zags have back-to-back road contests at Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's on March 7 and 14. GU welcomes Portland on March 21, and then heads to Santa Clara on March 28. The Bulldogs close the conference schedule with two home matches, against San Diego (April 3) and Pacific (April 11).
Any additional non-conference matches and start times will be released at a later date.
