SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga baseball right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina was named to the Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America Second Team announced Monday.
Legumina, a junior who served as GU's closer in 2018, returned to the Zags after being drafted in the 35th round by the Cleveland Indians. Last season, he ranked in the top 20 in the nation in saves with a school-record 13 on his way to earning All-West Coast Conference First Team honors.
The Chandler, Arizona, native appeared in 26 games overall in 2018, finishing with a 3-3 record in 48.2 innings pitched. He had 52 strikeouts with only seven walks and recorded a 2.77 earned-run average on the year, while being named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year watch list.
Legumina helped the Zags to a West Coast Conference Tournament championship and berth into the NCAA Regionals in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Jeff Bohling was the last Zag to earn Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America honors just two years ago. Marco Gonzales was also a preseason All-American ahead of the 2013 season.
Gonzaga begins its season Feb. 15-18 in the four-team Sanderson Ford Collegiate Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona, along with Oregon State, Minnesota and New Mexico.
