SPOKANE, Wash. -- Nick Ulowetz's goal in the 49th minute propelled the Gonzaga men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Oral Roberts on Thursday night at Luger Field.
The physical contest went scoreless through the first half, but Gonzaga led the shooting edge 7-2 at the break. In the second half, it was the Zags who came out with the pressure to take the lead and make it stand.
Ulowetz, who subbed in late in the first half, remained in at the start of the second half and made the most of his opportunity. After the Zags controlled the ball in their own defensive end, redshirt sophomore Austin Giftopoulos sent a long pass ahead to Ulowetz, who had gotten behind the defense. Ulowetz controlled the pass and shot it by the Golden Eagle keeper for what turned out to be the gamewinner.
Gonzaga continued to keep the pressure on, outshooting ORU 6-1 in the second half to make it a 13-3 overall edge for the game. Christo Michaelson, Jakob Granlund and Colton Cavey each took three shots, while Ulowetz and Sam Olson each took two. Gonzaga also had four corner kicks to just one for ORU.
The GU defense kept the heat off of goalkeeper Ben Willis, who collected the shutout without needing to make a save. All three Oral Roberts shots were outside the frame.
Gonzaga will play the last of its four-game homestand to start the regular season on Sunday when they host Seattle University at 2:30 p.m. at Luger Field. Live video and stats will be available at GoZags.com.
