SPOKANE, Wash.—Two Bulldogs have opted to forgo professional baseball and play collegiately for Gonzaga in 2017 as both Wyatt Mills and Casey Legumina did not sign professional contracts despite being selected in June's MLB First Year Player Draft.
A right-handed pitcher, Mills will return to Gonzaga. The rising senior was selected in the 17th round by the Tampa Bay Rays but did not sign, preserving his final year of eligibility. Last year as a junior, Mills took over the Bulldogs' closer role, going 3-2 with seven saves and a 2.65 ERA. Five of his seven saves came during West Coast Conference play, and he tossed 37.1 innings in all, including two 4.0-inning relief outings. Currently, Mills is playing summer ball with the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League.
Legumina, meanwhile, will begin his collegiate career with the Bulldogs despite being selected in the 25th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. Legumina comes to Gonzaga from Basha High School in Chandler, Ariz., where he helped lead his school team to the top seed of Arizona's Division I state tournament. He hit .417 with seven home runs during his senior year at Basha and also pitched in his first three years on the team. Outside of high school ball, he's twice made the Area Code team for Southern California and Arizona. The Rawlings-Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention award winner is currently playing summer ball for the Wenatchee AppleSox of the West Coast League.
Mills, Legumina, and the rest of the Gonzaga baseball squad will return to Spokane in August for the Fall 2016 semester. They'll begin the 2017 collegiate season next February.
