Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America Teams
SPOKANE, Wash.-Rising sophomore Eli Morgan was named Second Team Summer Collegiate All-America by Perfect Game this week after wrapping up a standout season with the Matsu Miners of the Alaska Baseball League.
Morgan headlined the Miners' pitching staff, posting a 5-0 record and miniscule 0.86 ERA in seven starts. The Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif., native struck out 47 batters while walking just 12, and he allowed four earned runs -- five total --throughout the 45-game season. He led the Miners to the league championship series, the Top of the World Series, and took the mound in game one. During his championship outing, Morgan pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, fanning six batters while allowing just six hits and two walks without allowing a run.
In the spring for Gonzaga, Morgan pitched in 14 games during his freshman campaign, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.36 ERA. He was a key reliever until losing time due to illness in April but bounced back and joined the starting rotation for the final three weeks of the season. His best start came May 10 against Pacific, when he went 7.2 innings without giving up an earned run while striking out five. That game against the Tigers gave Morgan his first collegiate victory.
Morgan is the only West Coast Conference player to make a Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America team, although Pacific outfielder Gio Brusa did receive Honorable Mention from the publication.
