WCC Player of the Week Announcement
SAN BRUNO, Calif.—After heading in the game-winner and creating numerous other scoring opportunities, Gonzaga University midfielder Lars Ludwigs has been named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for men's soccer.
A senior, Ludwigs ended his collegiate career in spectacular fashion, heading in the game-winning goal 28 seconds into overtime last Saturday, lifting the Bulldogs over Portland 2-1. For the goal, Ludwigs found himself unguarded near the Pilot's left post and nodded the short cross from Graison Le into the open net. The score was Ludwigs' second of the season.
Additionally, Ludwigs created numerous other scoring chances throughout the match. His first was a blast that hit the post in the 8th minute, and he forced Portland keeper Paul Christensen to make a point-blank save in the 21st. Ludwigs saw an additional look on goal in the second half, heading a corner kick inches wide of the right post. With the win, Ludwigs wrapped up a three-year career at Gonzaga in which he tallied eight goals and seven assists.
The award marks the Zags' second WCC Player of the Week honor in 2014. Conner Bevans earned the title Sept. 22 for a four-point performance against UNLV. Gonzaga finished fifth in the conference, going 3-3-1 in conference action. Overall, the Zags tallied a 4-12-1 record. The squad says goodbye to seven seniors - including Ludwigs - for the 2015 season.
