Clark Phillips WCC Men's Soccer Freshman Of The Year

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's Clark Phillips has been named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, was named to the All-Freshman Team and also earned Honorable Mention All-WCC honors, one of five Zags honored when the post-season awards were announced Tuesday.
Sophomore midfielders Nick Hamer and James Matern, both from Spokane, and sophomore defender Josh Phillips of Olympia, Wash., were named to the All-WCC second team and forward Nathanael Pacheco of Albuquerque, NM, was named to the All-Freshman squad.
Phillips, a forward who hails from Portland, Ore., tied for first in scoring in WCC matches only with 11 points, and his 4 goals tied for the lead in WCC play. He was tied for fifth in scoring in all matches and led the Bulldogs in goals, assists and points. He is the first Bulldog to receive Freshman of the Year recognition.
Hamer, a product of Mead High, had a pair of goal and two assists for 6 points. Matern, a Ferris High graduate who sat out last season and had hip surgery halfway through the 2010 campaign, was one of only three Bulldogs to start all 19 matches. He had two assists. Pacheco had two goals and a pair of assists for 6 points.
Saint Mary's College head coach Adam Cooper, who guided the Gales to their inaugural WCC regular-season men's soccer title, is the Coach of the Year, University of San Diego junior Dan Delgado is the WCC Player of the Year and sophomore Ryan Kawulok of the University of Portland is the Defensive Player of the Year. University of San Francisco junior Brendan Roslund is the inaugural Goalkeeper of the Year.
SMC, the lone team carrying the WCC banner into the postseason, will open the NCAA Tournament Thursday at Cal State Bakersfield.
