SPOKANE, Wash. - Due to heavy rains on Friday night and an unfavorable forecast for late Saturday and Sunday, Gonzaga University has cancelled its weekend West Coast Conference series with Loyola Marymount University. With the cancellations, Gonzaga has now completed its 2004 baseball season with a 24-27 overall record and 16-11 WCC mark. LMU will fly home to Los Angeles late Saturday afternoon and prepare to host the WCC Playoff after winning the WCC Coast Division with a 20-7 record, the Lions are 32-20-1 overall. LMU will host Pepperdine University after the Waves won the West Division on Friday afternoon.
Bulldogs sophomore catcher Kiel Thibault finished the season four hits shy of the single-season school record of 91 set by Larry Patterson in 1977. Thibault finished the season with a .424 average to post the second best average in school history and become only the fifth Gonzaga player to finish the season hitting over .400. Earlier this week Thibault was named one of fifteen semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, presented to the top collegiate catcher.
Gonzaga also bid farewell to nine seniors who did not get to finish their seasons on the field. Ending their collegiate careers this weekend were outfielder Marshall Bratton (Wenatchee, WA), pitcher Ed Clelland (Arcadia, CA), pitcher Eric Everson (Spokane, WA), pitcher John Gonzalez (Camarillo, CA), outfielder David Johnson (Agoura Hills, CA), pitcher/outfielder Matt Reding (Auburn, WA), outfielder Chris Sinner (Irvine, CA), pitcher Darrin Trautmann and infielder Brad Welker (Missoula, MT).
