MORAGA, Calif. - Derek Youpel recorded a goal and an assist and Matt Walker scored as well to give Saint Mary's College a 2-0 West Coast Conference men's soccer victory over Gonzaga University on Friday at Garaventa Field.
The win vaulted the Gaels (5-9-5; 2-7-2) into seventh place in the WCC and dropped the Bulldogs (6-13-0; 2-9-0) into last place. SMC has 8 points while the Bulldogs have 6 heading into Sunday's regular-season finale. Gonzaga will travel to the University of San Francisco while the Gaels will host the University of Portland.
Gonzaga fell behind early as Jaime Joaquin and Youpel teamed up to find Walker in the penalty area. Walker quickly cut the ball back and beat Gonzaga goalkeeper Dade Smith far post from a tough angle. It was Walker's first goal of the season.
The Gaels maintained possession throughout the first half and kept pressure on Gonzaga's defense. Gonzaga did make a quick run in the waning moments of the first half but SMC goalkeeper Brian Mason made a spectacular save off a header to keep the Gaels ahead 1-0.
Eight minutes into the second half the Gaels tallied an insurance goal. David Blanchard found Youpel who beat Smith with the one-touch. The goal was Youpel's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Mason recorded two saves as Gonzaga managed just three shots for the match. Gonzaga was blanked for the 12th time in 13 losses this season.
The Bulldogs used two keepers, Smith playing the first 63:51 prior to giving way to Sean Sosnovec. Smith had two saves, Sosnovec one as SMC held an 8-3 edge in shots. It was Smith's second straight start and his third of the season in four appearances.
