Baseball Adds Two Players For 2003 Season

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head baseball coach Steve Hertz announced the signing of two players for the 2003 season. Nick Froman and Josh Monroe have signed national letters of intent to play baseball with the Bulldogs.
Froman, a right handed hitting shortstop, has been a three-year starter at Lake Stevens High helping to lead the Vikings to three straight Washington 3A State playoff appearances. Froman hit .380 as a junior with 11 doubles and 19 RBI's earning second-team All-Wesco honors. As a freshman Froman earned honorable mention All-Wesco honors. He was a second-team selection as a sophomore. Froman helped guide Lake Stevens to a second place finish at the 3A State playoffs during his freshman season. A member of the Seattle Baseball Club summer league team, Froman led his squad to a second place finish at the USABA World Series in Carson City, Nevada. Froman won the USABA World Series batting crown and was named the USSSA/NBC infield MVP.
Monroe, a right handed pitcher, has been a two-year starter at Woodinville (WA) High helping guide his team to a Kingco 4A League championship as a sophomore. He was named a first-team All-Kingco selection as a junior after posting a 5-0 record with a 0.46 earned run average. He was also named to the All-Area team and selected to participate in the 2001 Area Code games. A member of the Chaffey Baseball Club summer league team, Monroe posted a 12-2 record with a 1.68 earned run average. Monroe also split time as an outfielder during his junior season at Woodinville hitting .290. Monroe was a high school teammate of current Gonzaga player Jeff Culpepper.
Gonzaga will open the 2002 season on February 1 at UCLA. The Bulldogs are coming off a 28-27 record in which the school won its first West Coast Conference Coast Division championship.
