SPOKANE, Wash. - After completing their most successful season to date as members of the West Coast Conference, four Gonzaga baseball players were named to the All-Conference team released on Friday morning by the conference office. Jason Bay becomes Gonzaga's first two-time All-WCC first team selection joining Steve Bennett and Barry Matthews on the first team list. Shortstop Kevin Hara rounded out the Gonzaga honors being named to the All-WCC second team. Gonzaga finished its 2000 season with a 28-25 record and 17-13 mark in the WCC.
Jason Bay, a senior from Trail, British Columbia, was one of three outfielders named to the All-WCC first team marking his second straight selection to the All-WCC team. Bay led the Gonzaga squad with a sizzling .388 average including a 4-for-4 night in his last collegiate game at Lewis-Clark State. A mainstay in the Zags number three hole the last two seasons, Bay led the team with 15 home runs to rank second on the all-time Gonzaga home run list with 35 home runs. His 47 RBI's and 13 doubles as a senior rank second on the team, while Bay's 16 stolen bases were tops for Gonzaga.
Steve Bennett, a senior from Helena, MT, was one of three pitchers named to the All-WCC first team after being a second team All-WCC selection during his junior season. Bennett finished his Gonzaga career as one of the most dominating pitchers in GU baseball history ending the season with a team high 109 strike outs which ranks fourth on the Bulldog single season list. Bennett served as the staff ace during his senior campaign leading the club with a 9-4 record and 3.61 earned run average. For his career, Bennett ranked third in career strike outs and seventh in career wins. During the 2000 season Bennett tied a school record for strike outs in a game with 18 against Washington. He was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on three occasions and the WCC Pitcher of the Month for February.
Barry Matthews, a junior from Northridge, CA, was named to the All-WCC first team as a designated hitter after being named an All-WCC honorable mention selection last year. During the 2000 season, Matthews set a school record for consecutive games with a hit at 26 games on his way to a .344 batting average. His 51 runs batted in and 17 doubles placed him at the top of the Gonzaga team while he tied for the team lead on the pitchers mound with a 9-5 record. Earlier this season, Matthews was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Washington State.
Kevin Hara, a senior from Tacoma, WA, was named to the All-WCC second team after producing 45 RBI's from the shortstop position.
