SEATTLE - The University of Washington Huskies (26-26) posted seven runs in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday night in Seattle as the host team out-slugged the Gonzaga Bulldogs (27-24) for a 16-9 victory at Husky Ballpark.
Gonzaga seemed to get off to the right start against Husky starter Matt Massingale as Brent Church connected for his fourth home run of the season to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0. Washington quickly answered with a three spot of their own in the bottom of the frame as Ed Erickson launched a three-run homer to right field off Gonzaga starter Sean Lichter (2-4). Lichter would last only into the second inning giving up a total of seven runs.
The Zags jumped back into the lead against Massingale with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning. Brian Munhall delivered the big base hit driving home two with a bases loaded single to left field. Eric Rodland added a single to left center to put Gonzaga back in the lead once again.
Washington continued the slug fest ball game in their half of the second inning putting seven runs on the score board. Jefferson Thiel tied the game with a lead off home run over the center field wall. Matt Holland just missed giving the Huskies back-to-back home runs with a triple that bounced high off the centerfield fence. Marc Rittenhouse would single home Holland and spell the end of Sean Lichter's day on the mound. Michael Done added the final big blast of the inning with a three run shot to center field.
Gonzaga did not go away quietly responding with a single run in the top of the third inning on another Eric Rodland RBI single and with three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. In the fourth inning Danny Evans accounted for the first GU RBI being hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Kevin Hara added an RBI single and Brian Munhall a sacrifice fly to close out the GU scoring against Matt Massingale. Washington reliever Tyler Shepple (2-1) would finally put the handcuffs on the Bulldog bats allowing just an Adam Stokey solo home run over four innings of work to pick up his second win of the year. Adam Stokey was robbed of a two-run homer earlier in the game when Matt Hollod brought a ball back into the park from deep left center field.
Adam Stokey led Gonzaga going 3-for-5 at the plate while Brian Munhall drove home three of Gonzaga's nine runs. Barry Matthews also collected a single up the middle to improve his hitting streak to 25 straight games which ties him for the school record set by Larry Patterson during the 1977 season. Michael Done went 4-for-5 for Washington with a five RBI night.
The two teams will conclude this two-game midweek series on Wednesday night with a 6:30 start time at Husky Ballpark. The game will be broadcast on Spokane radio station KTRW AM 970. Gonzaga's final game of the season will be on Thursday night against Lewis-Clark State with a 6:30 p.m. start in Lewiston.
