SPOKANE, Wash. - Senior Jason Bay, a native of Trail, British Columbia, was named the Canadian College Player of the Week on Friday afternoon as decided by a panel of sports writers for the Toronto Sun Newspaper.
Bay was awarded the honor after his standout week against Washington State and Whitworth College as the Zags posted a 2-2 record. For the week, Bay hit .556 to raise his season average to .430 while also moving up in the Gonzaga record books. His two home runs for the week moved Bay into sole possession of fourth place on the Gonzaga career home run list. He currently stands three home runs short of etching his name in the Zags single season home run list for a second time and just six home runs short of cracking the West Coast Conference career top ten home run list.
His seven RBI's for the week helped to move Bay into the lead in every offensive category as the Zags started play for the week. Barry Matthews three RBI's on Wednesday against Lewis-Clark State have since put Matthews back in the RBI lead. On the base path Bay scored six runs and moved his stolen base total to 9-for-9 on the year with two more stolen bases. During the Zags three game set against Washington State, Bay reached base eight consecutive times while posting a .632 on base percentage for the week.
The Canadian College Player of the Week is selected every Friday afternoon based on the previous weeks statistics for the 361 Canadians playing college baseball in the United States.
