Defensive display not enough in final points against Eastern Washington

SPOKANE, Wash.- Less than 24 hours after losing a heartbreaker in a fifth set, Gonzaga Volleyball (2-4) came up just two points short in another extra set thriller against Eastern Washington (5-1). The Zags won the first set 25-17, while EWU won the ensuing sets 25-18 and 25-23. GU won in extra points in the fourth set by a score of 30-28 before the 15-13 5th.
The Zags finished the afternoon with 94 digs, the most by a GU team since September 1st, 2022. This was the tenth most digs by a Gonzaga team in program history under current scoring rules.
Claire Wagstaff had 26 kills in the match, tying for the second most kills by a Zag in a single game since September 2021. Wagstaff had 3 block assists to finish the match with 27.5 points. Raechelle Dykstra was a key part of the remarkable defense today in her first weekend playing as a libero, picking up a team high 22 digs. EWU was able to take the win thanks in part to 25 digs from their libero.
For the second time in as many days the Zags had more kills than their opponent, leading the eagles 71-57. GU also outscored the Eagles in assists (68-53), digs (94-79) and aces (10-5).
Gonzaga had a season high 18 kills in the first set, outhitting EWU 18-8 in the category to cruise to an early lead. The .378 hitting percentage was the best by GU in a set thus far in the season. Eastern Washington took the next two sets after holding GU to a .194 and .042 hitting percentage in the second and third frames.
GU took the fourth behind a rally led by Veronica Sorensen, who finished the match in double digits with 13 kill. Dani Clewis had a season high 42 assists and 16 digs in an impressive double double.
Eastern won a back and forth fifth set that was tied at 5 different points, including at the 13-13 mark before two decisive points for the Eagles. This was the second GU match in as many days to take over two and half hours and be decided by three points or less.
Gonzaga will travel to San Antonio to take on UTSA on the Roadrunners on Thursday in the first match of the UTSA Invite. The Bulldogs will return to the Martin Centre when they host the Zag Volleyball Classic on September 17th.
