Volleyball swept in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas- Gonzaga Volleyball (2-5) fell in three sets to UTSA (4-2) on Thursday night, dropping the sets by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-21.
The Zags opened the game with a 5-1 run to open the match, led by an ace from Maggie Rickert. GU gave up the lead after UTSA went on a lengthy scoring run of their own, which was powered by 4 service aces. The Zags were held in check in the first set by a staunch UTSA block as GU were held to nine kills in the set. Five different Zags were responsible for those kills as Gonzaga continues to run a balance offense.
The Bulldogs also opened the second set on a 5-3 run before the Road Runners tied it at 10 points apiece. UTSA was led in the set by another 4 service aces in the set as the Zags were held to nine kills again. Isabella Arroyave had six aces in the match to lead the Roadrunners, who finished with ten total aces.
Gonzaga responded by opening the third set with an ace by Dani Clewis. The back and forth set was tied at every possible point between ninth point and the media timeout. The Zags went on a 3-0 run out of the media timeout to force another UTSA timeout before eventually tying the set again at 20 points each. UTSA then took the final behind a 6-0 run.
Veronica Sorensen led the Zags with eight kills on a night where eight total Zags had a kill. Raechelle Dykstra had a game leading 12 digs in her fourth game as a libero, while Dani Clewis led the Zags with 17 assists.
Gonzaga will return to the court at UTSA tomorrow at 2pm pacific time when they take on the IU Indy Jaguars.
