Zag Volleyball defeats IU Indy in five sets

SAN ANTONIO, Texas- Gonzaga Volleyball (3-5) rallied to take the final two sets to defeat IU Indy (4-5) in a five set match that featured two bouts of extra points. Gonzaga won the first set 25-16 before IU Indy took the next two sets 27-25 and 25-21. The Zags then rallied to win the final two sets with scores of 26-24 and 15-11.
Gonzaga opened the game with a 9-3 run that was highlighted by back to back aces by Claire Wagstaff to force an early timeout. The Zags took the set comfortably behind an incredibly efficient hitting percentage of .462. GU had 12 kills and had more aces (4) than errors (3) in the set, while the Jaguars were held to just a .083 hitting percentage in the first.
Although the Gonzaga hit for a .300 hitting percentage in the second as the offense continued to work efficiently, the Jaguars tied the game by winning the set on a run in extra points by capitalizing on two attack errors by the Zags. The set was tied at ten separate points before IU Indy took the second set.
Another opening run to start a set gave Gonzaga an early 8-3 run in the third set, with the run led by two kills apiece from Wagstaff and Raechelle Dykstra. The Zags went on another 4-0 run to extend a lead on two straight blocks into the media timeout. IU Indy rallied with a matching run of their own, led by two outside hitters as Jillian Tippman and Elle Patterson were into double digit kills by the end of three sets.
The Bulldog defense forced IU Indy to make 13 errors in the fourth set to help spur the comeback. Gonzaga made only two attacking errors while hitting for a .312 hitting percentage in the fourth. The set was tied at 22, 23 and 24 points in a back and forth affair before a kill by Nikita Clausen and a solo block by Raechelle Dykstra secured the fourth set for the Zags in extra points.
Maggie Rickert had a huge ace early to break an early deadlock in the fifth set to give GU a lead after the first ten points. Gonzaga had another successful block-touch challenge go their way to swing a point their way in a run to start the fifth. Gonzaga had nine kills in the fifth set while hitting an efficient .389 to secure the win.
Wagstaff had 18 kills, including the game winning kill, to lead all players in the match. Dykstra had 12 kills and 8 digs in her return to playing as an outside hitting after playing as a libero yesterday. Rickert swapped into libero after previously playing as an outside hitter, putting up a game high 13 digs.
The Zags will return to the court in San Antonio for a final time on Saturday when they play against East Texas A&M at 8:30 a.m. pacific time.
