Volleyball’s comeback falls just short against Oral Roberts

SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga (2-3) had a valiant comeback fall short by just three points against Oral Roberts (4-1) on Friday.
The Zags had more kills in the match than Oral Roberts, outscoring the Golden Eagles 68-50 in the category. GU also led the match in blocks (8-6), assists (63-46) and digs (67-53).
Oral Roberts took the first set behind a .275 hitting percentage while the Zags had unfortunate untimely errors to hit just .174. The second set also went to the visitors in the same manner, with ORU hitting .324 and scoring on 71% of sideouts in the second despite a solid .263 hitting percentage for the Zags.
Gonzaga went on a huge run to take over the third set, with Claire Wagstaff scoring a point in each of the first 7 points scored by the Zags. She had to back to back aces in the middle of a 6-0 run by GU to take over the set. Wagstaff finished with a game leading 21 kills. Gonzaga had 5 aces in the third set, while Oral Roberts hit for exactly a .000 hitting percentage, meaning they had as many kills as attacking errors. Gonzaga also finished the night with a better hitting percentage (.216-.185) than the Golden Eagles.
GU took the fourth set on a big run led by Veronia Sorensen, who personally scored 4 straight kills to force a timeout and take the lead. Sorensen finished with 12 kills, while Megan Deveaux joined her in double digits with 14. Despite holding ORU to another frame with a .000 hitting percentage in the fifth, Gonzaga let the game slip away on a final run as a result of close attacking errors.
Gonzaga will return to the Martin Centre on Saturday at 2pm when they host Eastern Washington in a regional matchup to close the home opening weekend.
