Zags are at New Mexico Sunday for next match
SPOKANE, Wash. – Arizona used a pair of second-half goals to rally for a 2-1 road victory over Gonzaga women's soccer at Luger Field Thursday.
The Wildcats' (2-1-0) Mireya Stephenson came off the bench and recorded a brace, her first and second goals of the season, within a six-minute span. Arizona outshot GU, 12-8, with a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. The visiting Wildcats also possessed the ball for 52 percent of the match.
In the fifth all-time meeting between the programs, it was the Zags (1-2-0) that opened the scoring in the 29th minute after Samantha Snorsky stole a pass and immediately struck a shot low past the Wildcats' Sofia Cortes-Browne. It was Snorsky's second goal of the season and the third in her career.
Stephenson's second career goal tied the score in the 68th minute. She brought in a long pass from Whitney Reinhardt and slid it past the Gonzaga keeper. In the 73rd minute, Lily Boydstun lofted in a pass from a free kick and Stephenson kicked in the loose ball at the near post.
The Bulldogs had an opportunity to even the match in the 77th minute, but Laurynn Ziller made a key save for Arizona on a penalty kick.
After subbing in at halftime, Ziller finished the match with three saves, while GU's Sydney Head finished with five. Stephenson tallied a game-high four shots, placing three on goal. Amelia Severn had a team-high three shots for the Zags, with two shots on goal.
Gonzaga travels to New Mexico Sunday at 12 p.m. Pacific Time. The Lobos opened their season against Northern Arizona Thursday. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on Mountain West Plus, with live stats available on GoZags.com.
