Zag junior scores four goals and records an assist

SPOKANE, Wash. – Amelia Severn scored four goals and recorded an assist, all in the first half, as Gonzaga women's soccer opened its new Pac-12 era with an emphatic 5-1 victory over South Florida Wednesday.

On a warm night at Luger Field, Severn matched the program record for most goals in a single game, finding the back of the net four times in the first 45 minutes. The five goals were the most by the Zags (1-0-0) in a season opener since a 5-1 win at Utah Tech in 2021.

Five minutes into the match, following a video review, Severn opened the scoring with a penalty kick. In the 11th minute, Samantha Snorsky opened her sophomore season with her second career goal, assisted by Severn for the 13th assist of her career. Three minutes later, Severn curled a free kick from outside the box into the net for the third goal of the match.

Severn added another goal in the 17th minute, sliding a shot past the South Florida goalkeeper with an assist from freshman Sienna Jenson, who was making her collegiate debut. South Florida's Amelia Malkin capitalized on a Gonzaga turnover and scored the Bulls' lone goal in the 33rd minute. Severn capped the high-scoring first half in the 40th minute, finishing a terrific combination of passes with a strike. Snorsky and Brooke Metcalfe were credited with assists.

Severn moved into Gonzaga's top 10 in career scoring following her four-goal performance. She rose to eighth all-time at GU with 18 career goals. The junior scored 10 goals last season and already has four this season, converting on all four of her shots on the night.

Gonzaga blitzed the Bulls early, putting seven of its eight first-half shots on frame. South Florida managed just one shot in the opening 45 minutes. The Bulls controlled the shot advantage in the second half, 10-5, but Gonzaga finished the match with a 13-11 edge in shots and a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. GU held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks and had 54 percent of the possession.

Making her second collegiate start, Sydney Head made seven saves in the Gonzaga net, while Gaby Rourke made four saves for the Bulls.

It was the second all-time meeting between the programs. South Florida won the only previous matchup, 2-1, in Tampa in 2023.

Gonzaga heads to Oregon (0-0-0) Sunday. The Ducks open their season Thursday at Portland State. Oregon and GU are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m., with a live broadcast on Big Ten Plus and live stats on GoZags.com.
