Zag Volleyball defeats Red Hawks in five sets

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga Volleyball defeated Seattle in an incredibly eventful five set match on Saturday.
The Zags required extra points to take the final frame by a score of 17-15. Seattle mounted a furious comeback after the Zags won the first set by a shocking 25-5 scoreline, with the middle three sets being split 23-25, 25-19, 23-25 before the extra time. The Bulldogs' attack was highlighted by their overall hitting percentage of .286 for the match. They held the Red Hawks to only .082 hitting percentage.
The Zags dominated the first set, closing with a commanding 25-5 victory. The Zags had five aces in just that set alone as Seattle struggled to get any returns or rallys going. The Red Hawks hit a negative percentage, -.348%, in the first set, meaning it would have been more effective for them to have not even attempted to return the ball over the net instead of attempting to score on the Zags.
The second set was a great deal more competitive as Seattle captured the set after a handful of attacking errors from the Zags. GU returned to leaning on their strong service game to secure a 25-19 victory in the third set against Seattle with a further five aces in that set. Three different Zags had three aces in the match, with Autumn Larson and Kelly McAuley adding three each while Sjakkie Donkers had four aces. GU dropped the fourth set despite rallying to tie the score at 19 apiece, forcing the final frame.
The Zags captured the fifth set in extra points, as Donkers had three of the last five kills in the match. Dani Johnson had a huge solo block to lock down the win on the final rally of the afternoon. The final point was her seventh block involvement of the day, complimenting a further nine kills. Donkers hit .415% while putting up 22 kills. Kate Herrick's return to the lineup lit a major spark for the Zags, as she tallied 26 assists and 15 digs en route to a crucial double-double.
The Zags will be back in action on Thursday when they host another home game, taking on LMU at 6pm.
