
Zag Women Ready for Elite Competition

GU runs in Minneapolis Saturday
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's cross country team runs at the 34th annual Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday. The elite event is made up of 10 races each fall on the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Course.
The Roy Griak Invitational, is one of the largest meets in the country, the Griak includes six collegiate races and four high school races. 2014 marked the 51st year of service to the University of Minnesota by legendary coach Roy Griak before his passing in 2015.
The Zags are one of the 15 programs in the Jack Johnson Women's Gold Division 1 Race. Six teams return from the 2018 competition, including team champion Minnesota and team runner-up Cal Baptist. In total six of the top 11 teams from last year's race are back at Les Bolstad Course this year. On the individual side, four of the top five finishers from a year ago return in defending champion Bethany Hasz (Minnesota), 2018 runner-up Megan Hasz (Minnesota), Kelby Anderson (North Dakota State), and Anett Somogyi (Cal Baptist).
The Gonzaga women are coming off of a second-place finish at the Cougar Classic on Sept. 13. Claire Manley led the Bulldogs with a first-place finish. Manley's winning time of 21:04.8 ranks ninth in program history. Gonzaga freshman Grace Fahrney placed in the Top-10 in seventh at 21:47.9.
Ally Legard was 12th, crossing the line at 21:57.7. Bulldog freshmen Brittney Hansen (22:05.3) and Alyssa Bienfang (22:07.3) were 17th and 18th.
After their performance in Colfax, Wash., the Zags were ranked 15th in the USTFCCCA West Region Poll. It's the first regional ranking for the GU women since Sept. 19, 2016.
Natasha Bernal, Bienfang, Fahrney, Hansen, Legard, Manley and Emily Phelps will represent the Zags this week in Minneapolis.
Saturday's 6K race begins at 8:20 a.m. Pacific Time, and will have live video and results on GoZags.com.
