Zags fall in overtime despite Jones’ career-high nine saves
WACO, Texas – The Gonzaga women's soccer team had their four-game win streak snapped, with a 2-1 overtime loss at Baylor Sunday.
The Bears' Raegan Padgett scored the game-winner in the 97th minute. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Baylor outshot GU, 19-10, in the final non-conference game for both teams. BU (4-2-3) placed 11 shots on goal, forcing the Zags' Isabel Jones into a career-high nine saves. The Bears had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
After a scoreless first 70 minutes, Danielle Hayden's first career goal came in the 71st minute for the Bears. The senior stole the ball near midfield and dribbled all the way to the top of the box, where she squeezed a shot on the ground just inside the post.
The Zags' Maggie Conners scored the equalizer in the 87th minute. The junior looped in a header to the far post over the Baylor keeper. It was Conners' seventh career goal, and second of the season.
Padgett kicked in a loose ball in the box just over six minutes into the first extra period. She scored her first goal of the season on a ball that was driven into the box off of a corner kick. Ally Henderson was credited with the assist.
Madeline Gotta took a team-high four shots for Gonzaga (7-3-0), while all three of Conners' shots were on frame.
The Bulldogs have a week off before opening West Coast Conference play on Oct. 5. GU welcomes San Diego to Luger Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Toreros (4-4-1) fell at Utah, 1-0, in their final non-conference match Sunday.
