Zags return to event hosted by Washington
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's golf team begins the 2019-20 season at the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington Monday.
The Zags' 10-man roster this season features six upperclassmen, including two seniors, Chris Mogg and Nick Nolan. Head Coach Robert Gray returns for his 21st season at Gonzaga.
Last season, Mogg was tabbed honorable mention All-West Coast Conference, after tying for third at the WCC Championships. Charlie Magruder returns for his junior season. He had a team-low 74.33 scoring average for the season in 2018-19. He appeared in all 21 rounds last season, with seven rounds or par or better.
This season, the Zags return to the Husky Invitational at the Gold Mountain Golf Club on Sept. 16. The two-day event is hosted by Washington. After appearing in the event for six straight seasons, the Bulldogs have not played in the tournament since 2015. That year, GU placed sixth at the tournament, led by a 12th place finish by Sean Walsh. Washington won the annual event last year at 21-over par.
"We've got a great schedule in store for us this year and it gets off to a great start at the Husky Invitational at one of my favorite golf courses, Gold Mountain – Olympic," Gray said. "This course is a great test of golf, requiring the players to really think about how to approach each pin location and knowing when to be more cautious. It's a course with great green complexes and has a number of Par-4's that will require mid to long irons on the approach but also has shorter Par-4's that can bite you if you don't pay attention."
Gonzaga's fall slate includes four tournaments, beginning Monday in Bremerton, Wash. The two-day 54-hole event will feature 36 holes in continuous rounds on Monday with the final 18 coming on Tuesday on the par-72, 7,159-yard course. Tee times start at 7:15 a.m. Monday morning.
This year's tournament field includes Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Boise State, San Diego, San Diego State, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii, Idaho, Gonzaga, Seattle U, St. Mary's and Long Beach State.
"We had a very competitive five-round qualifier to decide our Top-5 for this event and we expect that to continue throughout the season," Gray said. "In addition to the team event at Gold Mountain GC, we're excited to bring three individuals to a separate individual event being held close by at McCormick Woods GC. It's always nice to get more guys into competition when we begin the season."
