PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – Playing as individuals, Gonzaga men's golfers Charlie Magruder and Matthew Ruel are in 25th place after the first two rounds of the Husky Invitational. It's the season-opening tournament for the Zags.

Magruder started with an 80 (+8) in Round 1, and was five-over (77) in Round 2. After making 12 pars in the first round, Ruel had 11 in the second round with four birdies. Magruder made 11 pars in Round 1, and 13 in the second round along with a birdie.
Also playing as an individual in Port Orchard, Chris Mogg is in 29th at 16-over (160). He was 10-over (82) in the first round and six-over (78) in the second round.
At the Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course in Bremerton, Wash., Nick Nolan and Cameron Nicklos are both tied for 38th at three-over (147). The Bulldogs are tied for 11th as a team with San Diego at 16-over (592).
Nolan carded a 70 (-2) in the opening round, the lowest round of the day for GU, while Nicklos was one-over (73). Nolan's first round included 14 pars and three birdies. He made par on each hole on the front-nine. Nicklos made 11 pars and three birdies in Round 1. He made four birdies in Round 2, and finished two-over (74). Nolan was five-over (77) in the second round. His 26 pars through 36 holes are the third-most in the field.
Holden Backes is tied for 54th at six-over (150). He was two-over (74) in the first round after making 14 pars. The junior was four-over (76) in Round 2.
Zach Stocker (+7, 151) and Grant Johnson (+9, 153) are tied for 59th and 65th. Stocker totaled six birdies on the first day, while Johnson was two-over (74) in Round 2.
"A case of Jekyll and Hyde today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We played pretty solid for our four counting scores in the first round…kept big numbers to almost zero and were competitive with the rest of the field. The second round we made too many big numbers and little mistakes that dropped us two spots but more importantly, made it more difficult to catch up to a lot of teams even with a good round tomorrow. Not impossible, but definitely more difficult. This is an area we'll focus on a lot this year, as it was also a needle in our side last year. We did have some strong individual finishes down the stretch that really helped the team the second round.
"The course was soft today with all the rain in the past few days. Tomorrow's forecast is for more rain but hopefully that isn't the case, as the course can't take much more water."
The tournament's host, Washington, sits atop the team leaderboard through the first 36 holes. The Huskies have four golfers in the Top-10 and are 22-under (554). Long Beach State is second with a team total of 562 (-14). LBSU's Owen Avrit leads the field at seven-under (137). Three golfers are a stroke behind entering the final round.
The third and final round begins at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
