Zags run well at NCAA West Preview meet
COLFAX, Wash. – James Mwaura and the Gonzaga men's cross country team defended their titles, and the Zags' Claire Manley won the women's race at the Cougar Classic Friday.
On a windy afternoon at the Colfax Golf Course, GU swept the individual titles of the women's 6,000-meter course race and the men's 8K race. On the same course that will host the NCAA West Regionals in November, the Bulldog men cruised to the team title, while the GU women nearly took their respective title, falling by only five points to Washington State.
Manley's winning time of 21:04.8 ranks ninth in program history. She remained in front the majority of the race, crossing the line well ahead of second-place finisher Kyla Danforth (21:24.8) of Loyola Marymount. Gonzaga freshman Grace Fahrney placed in the Top-10 in seventh at 21:47.9.
Mwaura repeated as individual champion with a time of 24:07.4. In only his second collegiate race last year, he won at 23:55, the fourth-fastest time in program history. Friday's win was well ahead of the rest of the field, as unattached Riley Moore was second with a time of 24:27.0.
The Zags' Peter Hogan was fourth at 24:37.3 and Phillip Fishburn was fifth with a time of 24:39.6. Gonzaga's Luke Mason (24:45.2) placed 10th and Ciaran O'Leary (24:57.2) was 15th.
In the women's race, GU's Ally Legard was 12th, crossing the line at 21:57.7. Bulldog freshmen Brittney Hansen (22:05.3) and Alyssa Bienfang (22:07.3) were 17th and 18th.
Tough challenges against some of the nation's best lie ahead for the Zags. The Gonzaga women travel to the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., on Sept. 28. The Bulldog men have off until the Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4, in Notre Dame, Ind. Live coverage will be available for both races on GoZags.com.
