Zags in ninth at 10-over following Day 1
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Gonzaga men's golfer Charlie Magruder sits in a tie for 10th after the first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate on the Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club Saturday.
Magruder carded a 71 (-1), but just a stroke behind the Top-5. His first round included three birdies and 13 pars. The sophomore started on the 10th hole and went two-under on the front nine.
Holden Backes was even par (72) and is tied for 18th. He made four birdies and 11 pars in Round 1. Matthew Ruel also made four birdies and is tied for 63rd at five-over (77). Tyler Munetake is six-over (78) in a tie for 70th. He made 13 pars on the first day.
Chris Mogg is tied for 86th and is eight-over (80) following the first round. Brentt Salas is playing as an individual and is two-over (74). He is tied for 37th after making three birdies and 11 pars.
The Zags are in ninth place as a team. GU had a Round 1 total of 298 (+10). Elon tops the team leaderboard at six-under (282). Missouri State is second at two-under (286).
"We started off slow today, shaking off the first tournament nerves and rust, then played decently for the rest of the round," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "The course is playing much longer and more difficult than last year with the cool and wet conditions. Charlie and Holden put together solid rounds to start out their season. The rest of the guys had a lot of positive moments today but it was just those little things that happen when you've been out of competition for a while that kept them from being around par, as well. Having this round under their belts, I feel we'll continue to improve as the week goes on. We're definitely looking forward to getting back out there again tomorrow."
Evan Brown of Loyola (MD) is in first place on the leaderboard at five-under (67). Three golfers sit in a tie for second at three-under (69).
The second round begins at 6:45 a.m. Pacific Time Sunday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com from GolfStat.
