Zags return to Arizona for Loyola Intercollegiate
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's golf team begins their spring golf season at the Loyola Intercollegiate at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. Saturday.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played on the Palms Course beginning on Saturday for round one, round two on Sunday and the final round on Monday. All three days will begin at 7:45 a.m. MST with a shotgun start. The Par-72 course plays 7,015 yards.
The tournament field will consist of 17 teams: Air Force, Alabama Birmingham, Army West Point, Connecticut, DePaul, Elon, Gonzaga, Hartford, Loyola, Missouri State, Murray State, Seton Hall, SIU-Edwardsville, South Dakota, Towson, UT-Martin and Xavier.
The Zags return to the tournament for the seventh time since 2010. Last year, the Bulldogs finished tied fourth at 28-under par which set a program record for a 54-hole event. GU's David Ganz led the team with a total score of 205 (-11) finishing tied-tenth. Tyler Munketake followed just behind with a total score of 207 (-9) finishing 14th.
Charlie Magruder, Matthew Ruel, Chris Mogg, Tyler Munetake and Holden Backes will represent the Zags at this year's tournament. Gonzaga's Brentt Salas will play as an individual.
"After five weeks into the semester, we're excited to get the season underway," Bulldogs' Head Coach Robert Gray said. "The team has been working hard to prepare for this event and we're looking to build off our successes from the fall season. Our lineup is a mix of upper and lower classmen. Tyler, Matt and Chris have played the course before, while the others will be playing it for the first time. The course is pretty straight forward with greens that aren't too undulated."
Magruder has the lowest season average at 72.98 through three fall events. He tied for 24th at the Mark Simpson Invitational on Sep. 25. Gonzaga closed the fall season at the Ka'anapali Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii with a 12th-place finish in November.
Live scoring will be available all three-days of the tournament on GoZags.com from GolfStat.
