SPOKANE, Wash. - Three Saint Mary's College players finished with double-figure kills on Friday night as the 19th-ranked Gaels picked up a 3-0 West Coast Conference victory over the host Gonzaga University Bulldogs (4-12, 0-3 WCC). SMC (14-1, 3-0 WCC) won the contest 30-18, 30-25, 30-20 as the combined for a .361 attack percentage compared to only .118 for Gonzaga.
Kaui Salzman led all players with 16 kills on 36 attack attempts as Saint Mary's hammered down 55 kills for the evening. Lindsey Bogason contributed 13 kills on 27 attacks with no errors while Cassandra Kolkka added 12 kills on 23 attacks with a .435 attack percentage. The Gaels also controlled play at the net with 19 blocks, Stacey O'Connor and Christina Kirk each finished with four block assists.
Gonzaga was out of rhythm during the first game finishing with only 10 kills. Becky Jones was the early Gonzaga leader finishing the match with 9 kills. Senior Lauren Armas picked up a good portion of the work load in games two and three as she led Gonzaga with 13 kills on 26 attacks for a .269 attack percentage. Lacey Bell was the Bulldogs most active attacker with 31 swings but only six kills. Briawna Mueller led the Zags with three blocks including one solo while Jessica Herrera had 10 digs marking the 15th match this season she has reached double-digits.
Salzman also led all players with 15 digs while Melissa Stidham added 14. Saint Mary's has now won four straight over the Bulldogs.
"I think we had a fantastic crowd here tonight supporting our team," said Bulldogs head coach Kip Yoshimura commenting on the 788 in the stands. "We had a lot of young players working into new positions for tonight's match as we try to replace Christina (Davis) on the offense. It will take us a few more practices for those players to get accustomed to their roles, but I think we are improving with every game and I'm encouraged about how our young players like Becky (Jones) and Briawna (Mueller) are developing."
The Bulldogs found out earlier this week that they will be without the services of Davis for the remainder of the season after she suffered an ACL and MCL tear last week at Santa Clara.
Gonzaga returns to action tomorrow night for the second match in a three-game home stand. GU hosts the University of San Francisco, a 3-0 winner over the University of Portland. The Bulldogs then wrap up this home stand on Tuesday night with a match against Eastern Washington University.
